Exploring the Sweet Story of Sugar: From Indian Roots to Global Impact

Sugar Statistics – India
Production Volume: The Food Ministry estimates sugar production at 33 million metric tons (MMT) for the 2024-25 sugar season (October-September), which is expected to be sufficient to meet domestic annual demand.
Consumption: India’s sugar consumption for the 2024-25 sugar year is projected at 28 million tons, a decrease of approximately 1.5 million tons from the previous year, largely due to the absence of major events like the 2024 General Elections.
Recent Trends: As of January 2025, India’s sugar output has declined by 15.5% year-on-year, totaling 9.54 million metric tons. This decrease is attributed to reduced cane yields in major producing states like Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Uttar Pradesh, primarily due to adverse weather conditions and diseases affecting the crops.
Sugar Statistics – Global
Production Volume: Global sugar production for the 2024/25 period is estimated at approximately 186.6 MMT, an increase of 2.8 million tons from the previous year, with higher production in China, India, and Thailand more than offsetting lower production in Brazil.
Consumption Trends: Global sugar consumption is projected to rise to a new record, with growth in markets such as India.
