DRIP IRRIGATION SYSTEM TO BE INTRODUCED FOR CANE FARMERS IN STATE
In an attempt to double the income of farmers by 2022, Sugarcane department in Uttar Pradesh has decided to introduce drip irrigation system for cane farmers which will be liked with overhead tanks that would operate with solar pumps.
“As per directions issued by the state government, the Sugarcane Development department has decided to maximize benefits of drip irrigation system being established under Rastriya Krishi Vikas Yojana,” Cane Commissioner Sanjay Bhoosereddy said in Lucknow on Thursday.
The Cen Commissioner said that the best time for irrigation was from sunset to sunrise so in the daytime water could be stored in overhead tanks using solar pumps and the same could be used for irrigation in the evening or night.
“The use of water can be maximized by linking the whole system with drip irrigation. This will increase water utilization by over 50 per cent and the cost of production could be brought down by 10 to 15 per cent,” Bhoosereddy said in a statement.
“As there is less use of conventional energy, the cost of production will automatically go down and help farmers in saving money,” he said..
The Cane Commissioner said that drip irrigation would also ensure optimum utilization of fertilizers as there would be no over-flooding or misuse of fertilizers.
“A small dose of fertilizer will yield a good produce. This will also help in increase in income of farmers,” he said adding that in this way connecting solar pumps to drip irrigation system would ensure proper and co-ordinated use of water, fertilizer and energy.
